Fred Perry chose products from the Factorylux range - including the vintage enamel shades - to create the lighting for its new Spitalfields shop. The lighting is intelligently used to allude to the era when the perennial clothing brand was established.
The Fred Perry brand was created in the 1940s by Fred Perry and Tibby Wegner, an Austrian footballer. Perry was, of course, the last British men's Wimbledon singles champion (1934, 1935 and 1936) before Andy Murray's win in 2013. Although founded on sportswear, Fred Perry clothing has moved far beyond the world of sport, encompassing cultural trends such as mods, rude boys and skinheads.
The products chosen for the main lighting in the Spitalfield's shop were the Factorylux 360mm industrial lamp shades complemented with traditional fittings, including the vintage-style braided fabric cable. The shades are hung in two rows running down the centre of the shop. The industrial lamp shades are faithful to a design used in factories and mills in the early 20th century. The design would have been familiar to Perry's father who was a cotton spinner in Manchester. All the Factorylux light shades are spun, enamelled and finished in the UK for exceptional quality and durability - watch the lamp shades being made here.
The Factorylux range includes wall and ceiling lights with a vintage aesthetic. The design team chose the classic Maria Banjo wall lights with shades for Spitalfields. The Maria Banjo wall lights come in three finishes - vintage brass, antique bronze and retro silver - and a dozen shades: six genuine virtues enamel colours and six metallics.
