One of our favourite interior design magazines, World of Interiors, features our fabric covered smartphone cables this month. The woven cords, also compatible with tablets and other devices, appear in the 'What's in the air this month' feature by Nathalie Wilson. World of Interiors is the definitive resource for interior designers. It features pioneering projects, exclusive products and top-quality editorial content.
Back in May 2010, World of Interiors did an in-depth feature on Stanley Wilson, founder of Urban Cottage Industries. This was before we diversified into vintage printing and we were then known as Historic Lighting. The interview was by Matt Gibberd and there was a five page spread on Stan and Historic Lighting's products. At the time, Stan and partner Sophie were running the business out of a tiny flat crammed to the rafters with lighting in Dalston, East London.
The World of Interiors' feature was one of the seminal events in the growth of Urban Cottage Industries. As well as the inevitable sales boost, the feature impressed the wife of David Balfour, the renowned props master, who told her husband about Stan and Historic Lighting. David got in touch with Stan and he was commissioned to provide lighting for Martin Scorsese's film Hugo. We continue to manufacture one of the lights from the film, the Maria Scorsese. Fast-forward to 2014 and we're now a team of 26 people working out of a light and airy converted trouser factory in West Yorkshire.
Urban Extras is our brand for products outside our established range of classic lighting and vintage print. The first products in the Urban Extras range are fabric covered smartphone cables and tablet leads. We're delighted that World of Interiors has taken a shine to these simple but beautiful products. We've cables compatible with Apple devices that use its 30-pin and Lightning cables, and micro-USB cables which are common to a huge range of other devices. There are 14 plain and striped colours, all available in 1 metre and 2 metre lengths.
