UPDATE: the Writtle College students won the Young Gardeners of the Year competition with their display featuring our garden lighting. The garden is on display at the Ideal Home Show until 6 April 2015 at London's Olympia.
Original post: Writtle College is based in Chelmsford Essex and was established in 1893. It's one of the UK's leading agricultural colleges. The College has entered the Young Gardeners of the Year competition, created by TV gardener and writer David Domoney.
We were approached by Writtle College in January 2015 with a request to provide garden lighting for the project - cable, lamp holders and filament light bulbs. We regularly support student projects by lending lighting or offering substantial discounts.
This year is the fifth contest and it is run with the Ideal Home Show and the Prince’s Foundation. Six colleges haveentered the competition to design and build a show garden.
Each college has a plot measuring 5.5 m x 4 m and the brief for 2015 is 'reclaimed urban space', with the emphasis on the sustainable use of water and water harvesting. Writtle College was awarded a gold medal in 2014. One of the judges this year is Alan Titchmarsh, who'll also be presenting the award to the winning team.
The Writtle team's garden looks amazing. Dark Millboard decking is used for the walls. The imposing dark wood is broken up by overhangs for planting and recesses for lighting. The overhangs are planted with Mind-your-own-business and each recess features three Factorylux filament bulbs of different shapes and sizes.
There are benches made from reclaimed scaffolding boards and a table made out of a huge log which has been sanded smooth. The planting is predominantly foliage with some contrasting purple and cream flowers. Overall, it's a strikingly simple and attractive design.
