The new series of Grand Designs kicked off with a project using products from the Factorylux modular range, including a selection of vintage filament bulbs.
Gwyn and Kate ap Harri's Grand Design was the renovation of a former cinema in Thorne, near Doncaster in South Yorkshire. The Kensington cinema dated from the 1920s and was a nightclub before it fell into dereliction.
The ap Harri's bought the cinema in 2011 for £90,000. They moved into their new home in August 2013 having spent a further £350,000 on the project. The front facade of the cinema and entrance hall were retained and added to with a bright white 'diving board' roof extension. The rear of the cinema - the auditorium - was demolished and replaced with a modernist concrete box with exposed walls. The back of the house opens up onto a large garden by way of an aircraft hangar style door.
A variety of products from the Factorylux modular lighting range are used to light the open plan living space. In addition to the coloured fabric lighting cable and antique bronze hooked standard bayonet lamp holders, the lighting features the large globe squirrel cage filament light bulbs. The Factorylux filament light bulbs have been SWISS-made since 1906 and are exceptionally attractive and long-lasting. Bare bulb pendant lights can be designed using the Factorylux Custom Lighting configurator. When you've finished your design, it's made, tested and certified to BS EN 60598 at our high-tech production facility in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire and dispatched for next day delivery, ready for safe and simple installation.
